What do I need to consider before booking a workshop?

Group embroidery workshops are a perfect activity for hen parties and baby showers.
They're also a great way for community groups to spend time together, and for individuals to learn a new skill.
If you're interested in hosting a workshop for a group or an event then there are a few questions you will need to consider before getting in touch.
1) Who is this workshop for and how many people are likely to be involved?
2) Where will you host this workshop? Consider how much light the space has and how comfortable it will be to sit there for a number of hours. 3) Will you sell tickets to the workshop or will it be free for attendees?
4) Is there likely to be any children attending the workshop? Whilst I have seen children as young as 6 successfully having a go at hand sewing, the activity can be quite fiddly and will involve the use of needles and scissors.
5) What technique/skills are you looking to learn? Whilst I predominantly teach surface embroidery stitches, I can also tailor-make a workshop for groups looking to create a unique design or learn a specific embroidery technique.

What's your min/max number of people for a group workshop?

Please Note* Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, for the time being I can only take bookings for private groups of 6 or less. Bookings for school workshops is still ongoing, please get in touch for more details.
Workshops work best with a minimum of 4 people.
I can cater up to 12 people in a workshop. Groups of 13+ will require a second tutor, costing an extra £20/ hour.

For school groups I can run a workshop for classes of 30 with the relevant teacher and TA's present. Or, I can work with smaller groups of up to 8 on my own.

What can I expect to get done in a group workshop?

The amount you will achieve in a group workshop will vary depending on the class size and your prior embroidery knowledge.
I aim to teach 3/4 embroidery stitches in a lesson. These stitches will form part of a design that can later be finished off at home.
In a 2-hour workshop you will have the opportunity to have a go at all of these stitches. In a 4-hour workshop you will be given more time to practice these stitches, in the context of the larger piece.

Can I book you for a longer project?

Yes of course, please get in touch to discuss your ideas further.

Can I book you for a talk/ lecture?

Yes of course, I am more than happy to present a talk to a group.
Alongside embroidery techniques I am also happy to talk about: my own practice & design process or, the environmental and ethical impacts of the textile industry.

Who can book a workshop?

All bookings must be made by an adult. All school bookings must be made through the school. I'm a firm beliver that embroidery is a skill that all can have a go at and benifit from.
That is why my embroidery workshops are designed to be suitable for all abilities and ages from 8yr +.
If your group has any additional learning or physical needs, please let me know about this when booking.

How do private workshop bookings work in regards to Covid- 19?

Booking are now open for Summer 2021.
I have taken a pause on teaching private groups for the time being due to the current coronvirus restrictions. However I hope to be back open for business in the summer of 2021.

For the time being I will only be taking bookings for private groups of 6 or less that can be held in a public venue, with ample space and a good ventallation system in place.
If the Government guidelines change nearer the time, I can of course consider opening up my bookings to the usual numbers.
I apprieciate there is great uncertianty at the moment in regards to cancellations, therefore I will endevour, wherever possible to re-schedule any events that need to be cancelled in order to fit in with the Covid guidelines. For example: If either the city hosting the workshop or Coventry are in tier 2 or 3, the workshop will not be able to go ahead. Any atendees who have been contacted by Track and Trace, or who are showing symptoms of Covid-19 will be asked not to attend.
To keep things as flexible as possible, the first payment (a 50% deposit of the final workshop total, including travel costs) will not need to be made until 7 days prior to the workshop date. The remaining 50% payment will need to be paid on the day of the workshop. Any late payments will incure a 10% charge. The client has the right to cancel a workshop at any point for any reason.

If the client needs to cancel a workshop more than 7 days before the workshop date, they will not be expected to pay any outstanding fees.

If a booking is cancelled less than 7 days before the workshop, the deposit won't be refunded, however the client will not be expected to repay the remaining fee.
If a workshop is cancelled in this way, the client will still be able to receive the embroidery kits that would have been taught at the workshop. They will be posted out to the client at Charis' earliest convenience.

If a booking is cancelled on the day of the workshop, the remaing fee will need to be paid in full and the deposit won't be refunded. If a workshop is cancelled in this way, the client will still be able to receive the embroidery kits that would have been taught at the workshop. They will be posted out to the client at Charis' earliest convenience.

If Charis has to cancel the workshop for any reason, the deposit paid will be refunded and the client will not be expected to pay the remaining workshop fee. If a workshop is cancelled in this way, the client will not be entitled to the embroidery kits that would have been taught at the workshop however they will be available to purchase if requested.

These terms will be updated on a regular basis to fit inline with the current Government guidelines.
